Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?

Patients who want to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging are good candidates for Botox. Ideal patients also have moderate to severe facial wrinkles located on the forehead, between the eyes, or around the brow line and mouth. Botox is particularly useful for patients over the age of 40.

What to Expect at a Botox Consultation

Your initial botox treatment begins with a consultation. During your consultation, I will review your medical history and discuss your current concerns and goals. I evaluate your area of concern, examining your face and skin to provide you with recommendations based on your individual needs. My staff and I will also go over the likely outcomes of the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

How to Prepare for Botox

I recommend that you avoid taking any blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medication before your injections. You should also stop smoking and limit your alcohol consumption before you receive your treatment to help prevent bruising. It’s important that you cleanse and wash your face thoroughly prior to your Botox appointment to remove any dirt, makeup, or moisturizers that may be present on your skin.

How Does Botox Work?

Unlike surgery, I perform Botox injections in-office as the procedure takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. I use a thin needle to inject Botox into specific areas of your face to block signals from the nerves to the muscles. Once I inject Botox into the muscle, it cannot contract, making your wrinkles and fine lines relax and soften. Total units used in one Botox treatment may vary from 25 – 70 units per face depending on the facial areas you would like me to treat with Botox, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines, and glabella. I believe in micro injection techniques for more reliable results.

What to Expect After Botox

It takes around 7 to 14 days for Botox injections to fully take effect, but patients may be able to see initial results 3 to 5 days after treatment. Lines and wrinkles around your brow, eyes, and mouth appear reduced and rejuvenated, and your entire complexion appears softer and more vibrant. You may experience some mild bruising and swelling after your treatment, which resolves itself in 24-48 hours.

What Not to Do After Botox

It’s important after your injections that you do not rub or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours to prevent the Botox from spreading to other areas of the face. I also recommend not doing the following after your Botox treatment:
  • Do not sleep on your face the first night after your treatment
  • Do not exercise or perform strenuous activities for at least 2 hours
  • Do not excessively consume alcohol for the next 24 hours
  • Do not use ibuprofen, aspirin, or fish oil supplements for the next 24 hours
  • Do not get any beauty treatments on your face, such as facials, for at least 2 weeks

How Long Does Botox Last?

Botox generally lasts for 3 to 4 months. Eventually, the neurotoxin wears off, and the nerves start sending signals back to the muscles to start contracting again. In certain patients, Botox may last longer. Results tend to last between four and six months in people who undergo Botox treatment regularly.
