How Botox Works

Wrinkles develop and sharpen due to repeated muscle contractions when you make facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or squinting. Botox and Xeomin are precisely formulated neurotoxins that block nerve signals to specific muscles, causing them to contract less. As these muscles relax and remain at rest in the weeks after treatment, the skin has a chance to recover its natural resilience. Visible lines and creases smooth and soften to become less noticeable, giving your face a younger appearance.

Botox and Xeomin are both formulated from the same muscle-relaxing neurotoxin. The difference is that Xeomin is a  form of the compound without added proteins, while Botox includes additional proteins. Both work in the same way, but there are subtle differences between them, such as how quickly the results appear and how long they last. We will recommend one or the other in your consultation and explain why.

What to Expect at a Botox Consultation

Your initial Botox or Xeomin treatment begins with a consultation. During this confidential appointment, I will review your medical history and discuss your current concerns and goals. I evaluate your area of concern, examining your face and skin to provide you with recommendations based on your individual needs. My staff and I will also review your likely procedural outcomes and answer any questions you may have.

SURGEON BY TRADE

I am a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast cancer reconstructive surgery and cosmetic procedures of the breast, body, and face. To me, every patient is unique and deserves results tailored to their concerns. You can understand my approach to care by reviewing the testimonials and before and after galleries on this site and learning about the many “Top Doctor” awards I have won.

ARTIST AT HEART

Art is my other passion, and my artist’s vision guides my work as a surgeon. I have done technical illustrations for many journal articles, book chapters, and patient resource pamphlets for national societies. I am also an accomplished painter, sculptor, and photographer. When you visit our office, you’ll see a gallery of reproductions of many of my pieces in oil, graphite, and photography.

Botox Candidates

If you are in good health and troubled by signs of aging, you may be a good candidate for Botox or Xeomin treatment. Botox and Xeomin are most effective in treating wrinkles around the eye and eyebrow area. These products are particularly useful for patients over 40.

How Botox Injections Might Benefit You

Botox injections can make you look younger and more refreshed by smoothing dynamic wrinkles like:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • 11 lines between your eyebrows
  • Fine vertical creases above your upper lip
  • Marionette lines (the creases that form from the corners of the mouth down to the chin)
  • Neck bands
  • crows feet lines

How to Prepare for Botox Treatment

We will discuss how to prepare for your appointment during your consultation, but I generally recommend that you avoid taking any blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medications before you Botox or Xeomin injections. You should also stop smoking and limit your alcohol consumption prior to your injections to help prevent bruising. It is important that you cleanse and wash your face thoroughly before your appointment to remove any dirt, makeup, or moisturizers that may be present on your skin.

What Happens During a Botox Treatment?

Our board-certified nurse practitioner, Victoria Murphy, performs all Botox and Xeomin injections at Spiro Plastic Surgery. The procedure takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. We use a thin needle to inject Botox into specific muscles, making their contractions less intense so the skin above them has a chance to relax and recover. Botox and Xeomin soften lines and wrinkles in the treated area and make the skin appear smoother and more youthful. The total units used in one Botox treatment may vary from 25 to 70, depending on the areas treated. We believe in micro-injection techniques for more reliable results. After treatment, you can immediately resume your normal activities.

What to Expect After a Botox Treatment

It takes around one to two weeks for Botox injections to fully take effect, but most patients see initial results three to five days after treatment. Xeomin results tend to appear a little more quickly. Lines and wrinkles around your brow, eyes, and mouth become less noticeable, your complexion appears softer and more vibrant, and your entire face is rejuvenated. You may experience some mild bruising and swelling immediately after your treatment, which resolves itself in 24 to 48 hours.

With the ease and speed of treatment, the subtly transformative results, and the fact that there is no downtime for recovery, Botox and Xeomin treatments are among our most popular non-surgical procedures.

What Not to Do After Botox Treatment

After your injections, do not rub or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours to prevent the product from spreading to other facial areas.

We also recommend that you do not:

  • Sleep on your face for at least the first night.
  • Exercise or perform strenuous activities for at least two hours.
  • Drink alcohol for the next 24 hours.
  • Use ibuprofen, aspirin, or fish oil supplements for the next 24 hours.
  • Get any beauty treatments on your face, such as facials, for at least two weeks.

Botox FAQs

Botox’s effects generally last three to four months, longer for some patients. Xeomin tends to last a bit longer, typically about six months. Eventually, the neurotoxin wears off, and the nerves start sending signals to the muscles again, allowing them to contract as they did before. When you see your results fading, you can schedule a refresher treatment. The product tends to last longer – between four and six months – for people who regularly undergo Botox treatment.

A tummy tuck cost can vary widely depending on your customized surgical plan and the technique used. My team and I can provide an accurate estimate after meeting with you and learning about your concerns.

Botox and Xeomin are both formulated from the same muscle-relaxing neurotoxin. The main difference between them is that Xeomin is a form of that compound without added proteins, while Botox is made with additional proteins. In general, the results of Xeomin injections tend to appear more quickly and last longer than the results of Botox injections. Some people may also be more prone to an allergic reaction from Botox than from Xeomin. Each treatment has its advantages, and one of the biggest for Botox is how long it has been in use and how familiar people are with it.
